American Silver CoinCollecting American Silver Coins can serve you either as a hobby or as an investment.

Many people begin their collection of silver bullion coins with American Silver Eagles, or American $1 coins, mainly because these coins are from the United States Mint and thus are counted as legal tender. Not to mention that Silver Eagles are one of the most popular types of coins, they're traded often all over the United States and nearly every region around the globe.

More and more people are discovering the joys of coin collecting, whether they aim to be serious coin traders or are just doing it for the enjoyment. Collectible coins can either be commemorative or authentic tender by nature. An example of commemorative type coins is the Silver Buffalo coin. In 2001 the Silver Buffalo was brought back into production as a special $1 coin made of 90% pure silver that was created in commemoration of the buffalo nickel, one of the most beloved and widely collected of all American coins.

The original buffalo nickel was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, it was minted between the years of 1913 and 1938. Three different Native Americans were the models for the design. The three were named Chief Iron Tail, Chief Two Moons and Chief Big Tree. The inspiration for the classic design was provided by an actual buffalo that was held in captivity at the Central Park Zoo in New York City during that time.

All authentic Silver Buffalo dollars have the term "In God We Trust" inscribed on them just above the buffalo on the coin and in the upper portion. The term "E Plubribus Unum" can be found inscribed right below the head of the buffalo.

Either of these great coins would make a great place for beginners, or those who are experienced in coin collecting to begin to build a strong portfolio of American Silver Coins.
